Artist's Comments

Taken at Saltburn-on-sea, North Yorkshire.

Opened on May 1869, its the last remaining peir on the North East Coast of England. The Pier has always had a battle with the harsh North Sea. In the 70's the Pier took alot of damage, not to mention in 1975 the Council at the time submitted a planning application to the Department of the Environment to have the pier demolished!

In 2000 with help from the National Lottery Grant funding, work started on a major restoration program designed to return it to its former glory. Now it stands as a reminder of how the Victorians had an obsession with the seaside.
